Blessed with a great voice, electric dance moves, boyish good looks, and now a No. 1 R&B and Pop album, Omarion never ceases to amaze. His album 21 has something for practically everyone, including his core legion of screaming young female fans, grown-ups yearning for quality music, and hip-hop fans also looking for some good R&B to enjoy. The production is top-notch with highly-charged tracks produced by Bryan Michael Cox, Timbaland and Pharrell. Omarion, give us your thoughts on the fast success of your album. The album being number one is something I didn’t expect. God pulled a fast one on me. My last album went to number one, and to now have back to back number ones, God is truly great! The feel of this album is different. Your songs (like “Entourage” and “Ice Box”) definitely display growth; the production bigger and more intricate. I didn’t really get the opportunity to spread my wings as an artist with my first solo album. On this one I was able to really say what I liked or didn’t like. I was able to do more of what I wanted do, and I think this album was a lot different because of it and definitely more personal. You got your start being in a group. How does it feel to be a successful solo artist now? To come from a group, having to rely on other people, I can really appreciate the responsibility that comes with it. The responsibility is greater. I can appreciate knowing that at the end of the day if something goes wrong, then it is my fault. If you could change anything about the music biz, what would it be? People don’t have the will to rush out to the record stores and buy albums anymore. Tower Records was so huge and now they’re gone away. People want to just buy off of iTunes and on the internet. Now, don’t get me wrong. iTunes is real dope, but I like the idea of getting excited about the release of an artist’s album and going out to buy it. What does Omarion do in his spare time? I really don’t have a lot of spare time. But when I get a chance to chill, I love to watch cartoons and I try to rest. I thought you were a big sports fan. I am a big sports fan, and with me being so busy I’m always checking out [ESPN’s] Sports Center. I really like watching Reggie Bush play, and I’m a New Orleans Saints fan because of him. I also love basketball. What music do you like to listen to? Man, I am really an old soul. I’m listening to stuff like Aretha Franklin’s “Daydreaming,” and James Brown, God rest his soul. He really influenced me. My mom played a lot of music from Michael Jackson and New Edition that really influenced me. What would surprise people about Omarion? I can’t sleep in absolute silence. I can’t sleep without the music or TV playing. Usually I’m playing some Sade, Kem or some soothing music like Gerald Albright in the background. What’s the best advice anyone gave you? “To stay humble” What are your thoughts on Chris Stokes, who has been guiding your career since the beginning? He’s not just a manager, he’s my mentor and like a father. He’s taught me everything I needed to know about being business savvy. He’s a great guy and I’ve known him since I was a kid. I’m very happy to be able to work with someone who is like family. The big question: If you could invite any famous four people living or dead to your home for a dinner party who would they be? Man!…James Brown, Michael Jackson, Sammy Davis Jr., and Fred Astaire. There would be a whole lot of dancing going down! My God, we would be having a ball! |
